WEST HARTFORD - The Newington Post 117 15U American Legion baseball team made sure not to lose twice in the same day on Sunday.
Newington spread 12 hits throughout its lineup as it beat West Hartford 11-4 in the second game of its doubleheader at Conard High School.
It was far different than the first game had been, which Newington lost 5-3 after falling behind after the second inning.
In game two, Newington made sure to be the team to jump out to an early lead first, scoring five runs in the first inning.
Sean Hurley doubled in Austyn Howe to put Newington up 1-0. It was the first of two RBI for Hurley, who later drove in Howe with a single in the fourth.
Eamon Coggins’s single scored Newington’s second run of the inning, with the third coming as a result of a West Hartford error. A Hank Penders’ fielder’s choice led to the team’s fourth run and another West Hartford error led to the fifth.
Newington tacked on two more runs in the second after Erik Huffman’s base hit put the team up 7-0 and added another two an inning later. Howe drove in Christian Rodriguez on a long double to left field, while Dennis Machail brought home J.P. Gieras with an RBI groundout. Eamon Coggins’s sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 10-0 Newington.
Gieras was outstanding on the mound for Newington. He allowed only three base hits in 4.2 innings of work.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the frame when West Hartford got on the board. But Newington quickly made the run up with Hurley’s second RBI of the game.
Newington was never able to recover from a 3-0 deficit in the first game. The team attempted to come back in the fifth after back-to-back singles by Machial and Hurley brought home Penders and Howe.
But West Hartford added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-2. Howe later scored on a wild pitch to make the game 5-3.
On the mound, Machial went 5 2/3 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out two.
Newington is now 5-8 on the season and West Hartford is 10-4.
