The UConn football team will begin its 2018 football season at home against the defending national champion.

No, Alabama is not headed to East Hartford, but the Huskies are getting the next best thing. No, runner-up Oklahoma isn’t headed to Pratt & Whitney Stadium, either.

Central Florida, the only undefeated team in the nation last season and the one who proclaimed itself the national champ despite not playing in the College Football Playoff or finishing No. 1 in any major poll, will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 30 against coach Randy Edsall’s Huskies.

UConn’s schedule was announced today by the school and the American Athletic Conference.

The defending AAC champion UCF Knights have a new coach, as Scott Frost left for Nebraska and Josh Heupel took over in Orlando, but figure to be a strong team again.

The Huskies are coming off consecutive 3-9 seasons, the most recent of which came in Edsall’s first year back with the team. UConn’s coach from 1999-2010, Edsall did not begin his second tenure with the Huskies with much flourish.

UConn lost its final five games in 2017, including a heartbreaking 22-21 defeat in Cincinnati in its finale.

The UCF game is the only weekday contest on the Huskies’ schedule.

After UCF, UConn heads to Boise State Saturday, Sept. 8. Two more non-conference games, at home against Rhode Island then at Syracuse, follow before the Huskies get into the meat of American Conference play.

UConn will make its first trip to Tulsa this season, meeting the Hurricane on Nov. 3.

The Huskies also renew their series with UMass and will finish their non-conference slate by hosting the Minutemen on Oct. 27.

UConn’s regular season will end Nov. 24 at home against Temple.
