Roundup: Dao nearly breaks school, league single-game record in Terryville boys hoops win

GILBERT – A career-high 51 point night from Dominick Dao helped lead Terryville to a 70-47 win Friday night over Gilbert.

Dao’s 51 points, with 31 scored in the secon half, was complemented with 14 rebounds for a double-double. He was three points short of the all-time Berkshire League reord of 54, which was scored by Dylan Crowley of Gilbert, and was two points shy of Joe Johnson’s school record of 53 in a game.

"Dominick was unstoppable tonight.  He was dialed in and his teammates found him and realized he had the hot hand tonight. Dom is a humble star and all the guys on the team were so happy for him," said Terryville coach Mark Fowler.

Terryville rallied from a first-quarter deficit for the win, bringing itself to a 7-1 record.

Gilbert was led in scoring by Nolan Adams’ 20 points. Greyson Ursone and Aiden Blanchette each had 12 points for Gilbert.

Achievement 63, Innovation 32: Innovation boys basketball lost to Achivement Friday night in a 63-32 score.

The Ravens fell behind quickly and early, trailing 22-2 after the first quarter. Innovation was unable to climb out of the hole as it only got bigger through the remaining three quarters in the game.

Innovation was led in scoring by Amari Cruz’s 12 point. Jayden Newll-Kemp scored six points for the next highest total.

Leading in scoring for Acheivement was Devivone Tanskley with 20 points. David Hunds and Sadiki Darling scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Newington 66, Hartford Public 30: Newington girls basketball defeated Hartford Public on Friday, rolling to a 66-30 win.

Leading by six entering the second quarter, the Nor’easters scored nearly four times Hartford Public’s point total – droping 22 to HP’s 6, to enter halftime up 42-20. The Nor’easters outscored HP in each frame the rest of the way en route to the win.

Lily Ferguson scored 14 points, assisting four points and grabbing four steals. Bela Cucuta scored a game-high 15 points with four assists and Kendall Miller grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds with five assists.

Marlie Zocco and Selah Prignano each had even rebounsd. Prignano had 12 points as well.

Torrington 48, St. Paul 39: St. Paul girls basketball lost to Torrington Friday night, dropping its first game of the season in a 48-39 final.

Leading in scoring for the Falcons ws Nadia Reimer with 15 points, sinking three 3-pointers. Sam Naples had five points while Audrey Tice, Olivia Dahn and Emily Ronalter each had four points.

St. Paul trailed by one at the half at 22-21, and was able to take the lead entering the fourth quarter at 35-34. Torrington was able to take the lead and maintain it by holding St. Paul to four points in the final frame.

Gilvert 51, Terryville 40: Terryville girls basketball lost to Gilbert Friday night, losing 51-40.

Terryville was led in scoring by Zoe Zappone’s 22 points. Avery Owens had eigh points for the next highest total.

Goodwin Tech 52, Vinal Tech 27: Goodwin Tech girls basketball picked up a win Friday night, rolling to a 52-27 win.

Goodwin held Vinal to eight points through the first half as the Gladiators ran out to a 26-8 point lead. From there, Goodwin cruied to a win off Ericka Aponte’s game-high 17 points.

Megan Lukeszewski scored 12 points and Mariela Cartegena scored 11 points for Goodwin.

Leading in points for Goodwin was Damaira Fountain’s 15 points.
