Roundup: Newington field hockey shuts out Stafford

NEWINGTON – Riley Sullivan and Hailey Gaydos scored in Newington field hockey’s 2-0 win against Stafford on Tuesday.

Sullivan’s goal was assisted by Menna Majdoub while Gaydos’s strike was unassisted.

Goalie Carley Leonard made seven saves for the Nor’easters, who improved to 1-1 on the year.

Newington will next host Northwest Catholic on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bullard Havens Tech 3, Goodwin Tech 1: The Gladiators lost its second straight game to open the 2021 season on Tuesday.

Jillian Yezierski was Goodwin Tech’s only goal scorer while Arianna White made five saves in net.

Francesca Rameau and Amanda Gomes scored for the victors and an own goal from the Gladiators made it three total. Maria Monroy made three saves as its goalkeeper.

Goodwin Tech will host Wilcox Tech on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Holy Cross 2, St. Paul 0: The Falcons dropped their season opener on Tuesday in the shutout loss.

Holy Cross scored its second goal late in the game to seal the win. St. Paul nearly tied the game with five minutes remaining in the second half, but it was the victors who added an insurance strike.

Devon Bushka and Bella Milburn scored for Holy Cross, which finished with 13 shots to the Falcons’ two.

Zoey Rubins made 13 saves in net for St. Paul.

The Falcons will host Torrington on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Rocky Hill 22, Newington 37; Newington 15, Bulkeley 50: Michael Bohlke won the boys meet in 17:30, but the Nor’easters came away with a 1-1 record.

Newington will host Bloomfield and Hartford Public next Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.

Northwestern 15, Terryville 50; Northwestern 15, Wamogo 50: Nick Fusco won the boys race in 17:57 as the only Kangaroos runner in the top five. Colby Pronovost (28:33) and Noah Botto (33:49) were the other Terryville finishers.

The Kangaroos will host Housatonic Regional and Litchfield next Tuesday at 4 p.m.

St. Paul 18, Oxford 44; St. Paul 26, Seymour 30; Naugatuck 27, St. Paul 28: Mathew Doherty, Colin Reilly and Alek Rencurrel led the Falcons to a 2-1 finish on Tuesday.

Doherty came in at a time of 18:32, Rielly was next at 18:57 and Rencurrel finished in 19:17.

St. Paul will visit Torrington for a quad meet with Kennedy and Woodland on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Newington 27, Rocky Hill 31; Newington 15, Bulkeley 50: The Nor’easters beat both teams in the tri-meet, with Katie Bohlke leading the way with a first-place finish. Bohlke won in 20:09 on the 5k course.

Newington will host Bloomfield and Hartford Public next Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.

Northwestern 15, Terryville 50; Northwestern 15, Wamogo 50: The Kangaroos placed two runners in the top-five, but it wasn’t enough in its tri-meet loss.

Katie Deforest and Taylor Barnett finished in second and fifth in 22:25 and 25:53, respectively.

The Kangaroos will host Housatonic Regional and Litchfield next Tuesday at 4 p.m.

St. Paul 15, Oxford 45; St. Paul 27, Naugatuck 30; St. Paul 27, Seymour 35: Madelyne Bielecki (24:03), Elizabeth Speaker (26:10) and Charolette Jennings (26:11) led the Falcons to the sweep.
