AVON - In a battle for first place in Region B of the CCC, the Bristol Eastern girls volleyball team was able to remain undefeated with a 3-1 victory over Avon on Monday, extending their winning streak to seven to start the season.
Eastern uncharacteristically dropped the first set of the match 21-25 for what was only its second lost set of the season. The Lancers then turned around and won the ensuing three sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-22) led by 17 kills and 15 digs from Zoe Lowe.
The Lancers will return home for their next match when they face Plainville on Thursday.
Bristol Central 3, Farmington 1: The Rams picked up their fifth consecutive win Monday evening with a four-set win over Farmington. The victory puts the Rams securely in second place of Region B of the CCC, one game behind Eastern, which is the one team to beat them.
Central jumped out to an early lead in the match by winning the first two sets (25-19, 25-18) before Farmington found its rhythm in the third set, which the Rams lost 13-25. Farmington continued to compete in the fourth set and pushed Central to the brink of a fifth set, but the Rams finished the match with a 26-24 win.
Twenty-three was the magic number on the stat sheet as seniors Emily Ericson led the Rams with 23 kills and Gwen Torreso posted 23 assists. The Rams will travel to Southington for their next match at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Southington 3, Lewis Mills 0: The Blue Knights put an end to their four-match losing streak Monday with a sweep of Lewis Mills. Their record is now 3-4 and they sit in fifth place in Region B of the CCC.
The Spartans did not provide much of a challenge as Southington led a balanced offensive attack and only allowed Lewis Mills to break 20 points once. The Blue Knights host Bristol Central on Thursday.
Maloney 3, Newington 1: After winning each of its last two matches 3-1, Newington fell to undefeated Maloney by the same score Monday. Led by nine kills and 25 assists from Gracey Massicotte and 20 digs from Kelsey Drest, Maloney strengthened its lead atop Region D of the CCC.
Newington came out strong and won a tightly contested first set 25-23. The remaining three sets were played just as close, but Newington was unable to come out of any of them victorious. Newington did not accept the loss easily as it pushed the final set far past necessary 25 points before losing 32-34.
Newington will look to bounce back at home against Rocky Hill on Thursday.
Bristol Eastern 6, New Britain 1: The Lancers ran away with this match before halftime was even in sight to beat the Hurricanes for their second win of the season.
Eastern scored all five of its first-half goals in the first 26 minutes of the match. Freshman Emma Stavens opened the scoring with the first two goals of her high school career in the match’s opening 10 minutes. Sophomore Emily Nelson found the back of the net just six minutes later and Lili Moneault scored her first of two consecutive goals one minute after Nelson’s.
New Britain is still searching for its first win of the season and scored just its second goal of the season during monday’s match off the foot of Nicole Talaska.
Both teams will retake the field at home Tuesday when the Lancers face Avon and the Hurricanes take on Plainville.
