The weekend was a quiet one for high school sports in the local area, but the coming week is set to bring plenty of action as the shortened season rolls on, now approaching just one month until the end of the regular season.
The bulk of the action begins on Tuesday with a load of games and meets, and due to the holiday, there is just two local teams with a game scheduled for Monday. The Newington boys soccer team, fresh off of two straight shutout wins, will look to keep the defense humming when it travels to take on Platt at noon. This will be the team’s first matchup with the Panthers this season. Meanwhile, the St. Paul girls soccer team will travel to face Torrington at 5 p.m.
The Newington girls soccer team has a marquee matchup the following day, meeting Berlin at home on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. There will be plenty of star power in this one, with Newington and its All-New England senior Olivia Mullings pitted against Berlin and its All-State senior Ashley Wenzel, who is back after missing all of last season with a leg injury.
There are also plenty of other local battles happening on Tuesday, including New Britain girls volleyball, and girls and boys soccer teams all taking on Bristol Central. The soccer games kick off at 3:45 p.m., and the volleyball team starts at 5 p.m. Over at Bristol Eastern, the same three Lancers teams will be taking on Lewis Mills, also with the same start times.
The Innovation girls soccer team, after pouring in eight goals in Friday’s win over Goodwin Tech, will look to stay hot on Tuesday when it hosts Classical Magnet. Over in Southington, the two soccer teams and the girls volleyball teams are in action against Avon, while Plainville’s girls volleyball and girls soccer teams will face Farmington.
More local matchups are on the slate for Wednesday, with Bristol Central girl swimming traveling to face Plainville, while in boys and girls cross country, Bristol Eastern will be traveling to take on the Blue Devils. Goodwin Tech will also be competing in that meet.
More local matchups continue on Thursday, when New Britain will have a pair of very tough tests with the boys soccer and girls volleyball teams hosting Bristol Eastern. The Lancers girls volleyball team is currently a perfect 4-0.
Also in girls volleyball, Berlin heads to Newington on Thursday, while the Newington football team has a 7-on-7 scrimmage against Middletown at 5:30 p.m. More matchups between area teams are on the docket for Friday, including Bristol Central cross country facing off against Plainville, Bristol Eastern cross country taking on Southington, and Eastern girls soccer hosting New Britain.
Saturday is a relatively quiet day, but Southington and Bristol Central boys soccer will play in Bristol at 12:30 p.m., representing the lone game going on that day.
