HARTFORD – Playing within the confines of Dunkin Donuts Park on Tuesday night, the Newington 17U American Legion baseball team raced out to a big lead on the big stage against West Hartford, but the game’s finish proved to be a thrilling finale that matched the venue.
After grabbing an early 7-0 lead, Newington edged West Hartford 8-7 to eclipse the .500 mark on the season, improving to 10-9. West Hartford made a furious comeback bid, but Sam Parsell helped Newington avoid the collapse by tossing 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one earned run and recording the save.
Jordan Barnes helped Newington build its seven-run cushion by logging three hits on the evening, including a triple, an RBI and three stolen bases. Andrew Bugnacki, Sean Hurley and Hank Penders all had multi-hit games for Newington as well, while Parsell, Dennis Machial, Abel Collado, Austyn Howe and Jesus Cintron all found the hit column.
The Newington offense pounded out 14 total hits to build a lead that proved to be just enough to secure the victory.
Alex Bugnacki earned the win on the mound for Newington, striking out six in four innings of work.
