NEW BRITAIN - It is another season for the Newington wrestling team and another season of adjusting to a young and developing roster.

The Indians have 14 underclassmen out of 17 total grapplers and just three juniors.

That inexperience showed Wednesday evening as Newington took on a team almost double in size and unfortunately for the Indians, things were not in its favor in the 39-37 loss to New Britain.

Although Newington won a majority of the matches (6 out of 10), the forfeits proved costly. The Indians gave up three forfeits overall, costing it 18 total points, while the Hurricanes only had one.

After losing the first match, Newington won the next two weight classes. Jacob Zotti pinned New Britain’s Mike Martinez at 120 pounds and Riley Feldblum pinned Eli Aponte at 126 pounds to start the meet off.

“They all wrestled really well,” Newington head coach Tony Nguyen said of Zotti and Feldblum. “They’ve been working a lot on bottom positions. I saw a lot of them were going over what we taught them.”

The Indians then claimed the 145- and 152-pound matches. Xavier Gomes pinned New Britain’s Kaleb Camp in 2:35 while Matt Buslewicz beat Kevin Carrasquillo by decision 14-0.

Aiden Lozada beat Jovany Rodriguez by a 6-3 decision during the 170-pound match and lastly, the Indians won the final match when Wyatt Bernard pinned Oran Burnett in the 225-pound match in 3:32.

Forfeits aside and despite winning a majority of the overall matches, there were still plenty of things Nguyen would like to see his team improve on over the next few weeks.

“We just have to work on attacking,” Nguyen said. “Too often we’re wondering how to counter someone letting them dictate the matches but I feel like [Wednesday] we were going after people and we just have to continue doing that.”
