NEWINGTON – The renovation of Anna Reynolds School is on track for completion ahead of the 2024-2025 school year.

Chairman of the School Project Building Committee Stephen Woods updated the Newington Town Council on the project at the Reservoir Road elementary school at its last meeting.

Construction began following the last day of school this past year and has continued through early winter.

“Through the summer months when children were not in school a lot of the infrastructure was done around the site, including new drainage, electrical and parking lot configuration,” Woods said. “The site work is probably 65 to 75% done at this point.”

Construction crews are expecting to wrap up work on the administrative and former kindergarten wings on the property’s northwest side over the next month.

“The good news is that we are still on budget,” Woods said. “We have lagged behind schedule-wise. Most of our schedule delays to this point have all been caused by material delays, but I believe we are just about through that.”

The school was built in 1955 and needed updates to infrastructure, HVAC equipment, windows, roofing and much more. Voters in town approved bonding the $35.5 million project in a Nov. 2020 referendum.

The committee and construction team expect to stay within their allotted budget and have barely touched contingency funds, according to Woods.

“Once you start taking it apart you find problems you didn’t anticipate,” he said. “There have been some change orders, but they have been very minor in nature considering the scope. We have a great team of people who are willing to put everything aside and get this project done for the taxpayers of the town, for you - the ones who have allowed us to move forward with this project and most importantly, for the kids that go to this school.”

Once the A/C wings are completed, students and staff will be moved back in and work will begin on the B wing, which runs north to south on the building’s upper level.

“That is set to be completed by the end of the summer which gets us kind of back on track again,” Woods said.

The target completion date for the entire project is Aug. 2024.
