NEWINGTON - A local web-based discussion forum is now being recognized as a model for social media users and online communities worldwide, according to its creators.

The “What’s Happening in Newington” Facebook Group took part in the Facebook Communities Summit Oct. 1, page administrator Scott Greczkowski informed the group’s followers recently, sharing a little bit about the digitized summit.

“I was invited to participate in the Facebook Communities Summit with Mark Zuckerberg,” his post read. “Before the main show started we went in a ‘room’ with the Northeast Facebook Community Team, in there we were told that WHIN is one of Facebook’s Top 1,000 Community Groups. We were also told that our group was closely watched at the start of the pandemic, and we were a model for other community groups at that time.”

“I want to thank Facebook for recognizing us again, and I want to thank all of you for being here,” Greczkowski continued, adding that the people who keep the group running spend countless hours moderating the site, ensuring users follow posted rules and that it remains family-friendly.

“Here at WHIN we have not just built a group, we have built a community, and we thank you for being part of it!”

Greczkowski, who could not be reached by the Herald for comment this week, also said he has been invited to become a Certified Community Leader for Facebook.

According to the corporation, the Facebook Community Leadership Program is a global initiative that provides over 100 community leaders around the world the tools, support and funding they need to best lead their communities. Participants are presented with new and innovative ways to promote a positive and lasting impact on the communities they serve.

What’s Happening In Newington was established as a private Facebook group in 2014. Since then it has grown to 14,273 members and counting. According to its ‘About’ section, the group is dedicated to discussing Newington-based events, happenings and news.

Greczkowski, a Newington resident and longtime volunteer with Newington Community Television, is also the founder of the website SatelliteGuys.US.
