NEWINGTON - The 14th annual Cruising Newington will be exactly what its name implies.

Since there has been no indication that social distancing measures and the COVID-19 pandemic will let up anytime soon, a car parade is what show chairman Bob Newbold envisioned for the 2020 event.

Instead of parking their treasured show cars on Market Square downtown one balmy summer evening, participants will literally be cruising Newington on Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m.

“I think by the middle of June all the car guys will be ready to take their cars out for a nice ride,” Newbold said recently. “We’re also inviting other people to decorate their cars or trucks like floats and ride in the parade.”

Newington police typically shut down Market Square for the Newington Chamber of Commerce event and the department is planning to provide its support this year as well.

“Chief Stephen Clark has been very supportive,” said Peter Forcellina, executive director of the chamber. “We’re also extending the parade to some of the chamber’s small business members who have been invited to drive their vehicles as well.”

The route will begin and end at the former Best Market plaza on Constance Leigh Drive and Lowrey Place. Cars will head up Main Street to Dowd Avenue, turn left on Willard Avenue, cross Route 175 and then bear left on New Britain Avenue and head back up Main Street past Clem Lemire, before making a final right turn at Lowrey Place.

Connecticut Street Legends has provided the show cars at past years’ Cruising Newington events and members’ participation will be solicited again this year.

“We may have a gathering with coffee and car owners afterwards depending on what the state’s guidelines are at that time,” Newbold added.
