NEW BRITAIN – Central Connecticut State University has announced a date for a commencement ceremony for 2020 graduates.
The university said the spring commencement will now be held Sunday, Oct. 11 at the XL Center in Hartford. A party for the graduates is also in the works for the Saturday before the ceremony.
Spring commencement ceremonies were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. University President Zulma Toro said in a video message she knows many students had previously expected to put on a cap and gown this weekend and she would have much preferred to have been able to shake everyone’s hand during the school’s original spring commencement.
“The coronavirus has spoiled that for us, but at least it’s temporary,” she said. “I look forward to congratulating you in person in October. I don’t want the spring semester to end without me expressing my pride in you, and all that you have achieved.”
Toro recognizes that even under regular circumstances, the coursework students embark on is challenging. Yet despite the campus shutting down, classes moving to online courses, social distancing, and all the complications caused by the virus, she said students have been resilient, patient and compassionate.
“I wish you the very best, be well, stay strong, and I hope to see you at commencement on October 11,” Toro said.
