NEWINGTON – The week before Mother’s Day, Market Square Dental Associates officially became an all-female team.

Dr. Vanessa Robb joins staff at 51 Market Square. She’s been there for years, but just purchased the company from its previous owner, Dr. Walter Leckowicz, who now operates a solo practice at 103 Market Square.

“It means a lot to me,” Robb said of her new role.

Market Square Dental’s doors are open to patients of all ages, from infant to centenarian.

During Newington’s Trick or Treat around the Center every October, the storefront is buzzing with kids in costume picking up candy. Staff would rather see their young patients and families at this festive event than deny them a sweet treat not typically recommended for oral health.

“It’s really nice to be a part of this community,” Robb explained. “We have very loyal, happy patients we’ve been lucky enough to have been seeing for decades. We get to know them really well. We see kids grow up throughout the years and people become parents and grandparents.”

She is joined by three dental hygienists, three dental assistants and three support specialists. They are all women.

“I feel really proud of the group of women I work with,” Robb said. “There is this camaraderie among us so we’re able to succeed inside and outside the office. We work really, really well together.”

They have grown to be flexible around each one another’s schedules, so family commitments and personal needs are honored. Since most happen to be mothers, they understand patients’ common fear of coming to the dentist.

“There is certainly a maternal part of caring for anybody,” Robb pointed out. “We have a way of putting patients at ease. Moms just know how to take care of people.”

Dental assistant Amanda Grabowski loves the environment they’ve created and enjoys coming to work.

“As a mother to a young girl, I find it inspiring that Dr. Robb is a not only a woman in a male-dominated field, but a female small business owner as well,” Grabowski said. “It is so important for girls to have strong, independent female role models and we definitely have plenty of those here. It is such a fulfilling experience to work in a place where a team of women work together and support each other so well.”
