If you can’t wait for a brisk and snowy January, there’s a group for you.
The Newington Ski Club (NSC) is hosting an Open House on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Indian Hill Country Club, 111 Golf St., Newington. Skiers and snowboarders looking for camaraderie and discounted rates at popular wintertime destinations are encouraged to attend.
NSC’s membership in the Connecticut Ski Council (CSC) means club members receive discounts at local ski shops, premiums at ski resorts across the Northeast and group rates on designated Ski Council Days.
Through the winter months, they meet every Monday night at Mt. Southington to compete against dozens of other CSC clubs.
“We look forward to a cold and snowy winter this year,” said Michael Isko, who is helping to plan the upcoming open house.
Isko works in New Britain and lives in West Hartford. He tagged along with a friend to an NSC meeting a few years ago and has never looked back.
“It’s a very welcoming group with inviting activities for a reasonable cost,” he explained.
Isko discovered like-minded new friends, whom he described as “down-to-earth people who like getting outdoors and doing exciting things.”
They travelled to Big Sky, Montana together for a ski trip last year.
“We usually we just drive up to Sugarloaf, Maine but one of our group members arranged for the trip and it was a magnificent success,” Isko said.
Last March the club placed first in the On-Snow Winter Carnival at Okemo in Vermont.
The club was founded in 1946. Since then it has built a strong reputation among the skiing community. More than 700 members of all ages hail from many different places, including other states. There are also about 100 junior members under age 18.
“We are always looking to expand our membership and diversify, too,” Isko pointed out. “People from all generations are welcome.”
Although they do love a good chairlift ride and a cold zip down a mountain, NSC members live beyond winter sports.
In fact, they plan to meet at Talcott Mountain in Simsbury this Saturday, Nov. 10, to honor a former club member who lost his life hiking more than a decade ago. The Pete Noyes Memorial Hike is one of many off-season events.
The club’s Monday night ski races become bike rides in the summer months. Members also embark on kayaking and hiking excursions in ski areas across New England.
Monday night racing begins on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at Mount Southington. A preliminary gathering with registration and pizza will take place at the mountain on Dec. 17.
Other highlights this season include the CSC’s Snowball Nov. 17 at the Hartford Marriott in Windsor; the club’s Christmas Party Jan. 17 at Indian Hill Country Club; Kids Day Jan. 27 at Mount Southington, and a trip to Mount Snow in Vermont March 1-3.
