Meet Papi, an 11-year-old orange and yellow Conure at our Newington Care Center. Large birds such as parrots and cockatoos can be very rewarding pets for a committed owner. They tend to have long lifespans, some longer than humans! They require plenty of social time and enrichment, and may become particularly attached to one person.
Most can be trained to allow handling, perform tricks, and some may learn to talk. Their housing and diet needs vary by species. Regular visits to an experienced bird veterinarian will be necessary. For most species, a DNA test is the only way to tell males from females.
Inquiries for adoption should be made at the Connecticut Humane Society located at 701 Russell Road in Newington or call toll free: 1-800-452-0114. The Connecticut Humane Society is a private organization with adoption centers in Newington, Waterford and Westport.
The Connecticut Humane Society is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organizations on the national, regional or local level.
