NEWINGTON - Ferrari’s Appliance is hosting a seasonal sale Memorial Day weekend, kicking off May 17.

Air conditioners and grills are the hottest items right now, as the days start feeling more like summer.

Store manager Ray Maida encourages people planning to look at air conditioning units to come prepared with measurements of wall sleeves. It’s also crucial to know how many square feet of living space you’re looking to keep cool, whether it’s just one bedroom or the whole house.

“That will affect the amount of BTUs you get,” Maida explained. “The higher the amount of BTUs, the more space can be cooled and the cooler the house will be.”

A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a unit of measure that indicates how much heat can be removed from a space.

It’s also important to check the electrical outlet where the air conditioner will be plugged into the wall. A tandem or perpendicular outlet with 230 volts handles most units.

Providing this type of insight is what makes Ferrari’s staff preferable by their customers to employees of the big-box appliance stores.

“We educate people,” Maida said. “We will help them find the right unit for them.”

If their outlet is the more typical parallel 115 volt type, that will accommodate some, but not all, units.

“We’re not going to sell them something that’s not going to work,” he added. “That would be a waste of our time and theirs.”

Staff will come to take measurements of a customer’s home upon request, for an extra fee. The store also offers free delivery.

Grills are flying off the shelves these days. Ferrari’s offers a variety of different brand name models, including Bosch and Napoleon.

New this year, Napoleon has released 2018 units with a higher-grade stainless steel.

“It won’t rust at all,” Maida said. “You don’t have to worry about leaving it out in the rain.”

The company offers a lifetime warranty and is having a promotion right now.

The purchase of a grill comes with hundreds of dollars in free accessories like a charcoal tray, Bluetooth thermometer, rotisserie basket, cutting board and more.

What are a few other popular summer appliances?

“Dehumidifiers, for when it gets muggy in the basement,” Maida said. “And air purifiers.”

These and more can all be found at Ferrari’s Appliance, 460 New Britain Ave., Newington. (860) 436-9993. Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., closed Sundays.
