NEWINGTON - Beauty is not exclusive at Hair on the Square; it is accessible to everyone.
In business for the last 60 years, the downtown salon at 148 Market Square offers low prices for men, women and children. It is handicapped-accessible and stylists are constantly training and evolving their craft along with the ever-changing beauty industry.
Owner Tammy Selander is excited about the new LOMA hair care line, which she uses on customers and sells in the shop.
“This is an organic line and is sulfate- and paraben-free,” she explained. “A lot of people don’t realize sulfate is a chemical detergent. They put it in a lot of our shampoos to suds up the product, but LOMA is wonderfully sudsy without it.”
People undergoing cancer treatment are advised to stay away from products containing paraben. In stark contrast to this harsh chemical ingredient, Aloe Vera is actually the base of all LOMA products.
The company brands itself as using “naturally healing, organic ingredients and essential oil-based fragrances … all at a price that rivals retail outlets while delivering performance that far exceeds them.”
The salon is also using the Oglio RioRio semi-permanent hair coloring system, featuring bright shades for ladies who opt for a bolder look.
“It outlasts almost every other system we’ve tried,” Selander said.
Hair color for men is also available. Stylists Kim Schneider and Kelli Addy specialize in barbering services. They also happen to be the salon’s cosmetology experts, providing makeup consultations and services to clients.
If staff have a New Year’s resolution, it would be to help people keep their locks healthy, strong and beautiful through the cold winter months, when hair tends to dry out and become brittle faster. That’s why they are now offering a “Love Your Hair” deep conditioning mask for $10 during any visit, all winter long.
This March stylists will be continuing their ongoing education. They plan to participate in extended training for several new hair straightening systems that cater to people with curly and wavy hair.
After a joyful holiday season Selander expressed her gratitude to families who have been part of the salon family for generations. She hopes to welcome lots of new faces this year.
“Thank you to all our loyal customers,” she said. “We were overwhelmed by your generosity throughout the holidays. Keep an eye out for the Best of Newington awards early this spring and remember to vote for us.”
She’s now working on putting together some Valentine’s Day discount packages, which will be posted to their website and Facebook page in the next few weeks.
Keep an eye out for the option of online appointment booking and text reminders, coming soon. Rewards cards for new and returning customers remain available.
