NEWINGTON – One person is dead and another is in custody after a prolonged stand-off on Gilbert Road.

Police are treating the death as a homicide, Lt. Nicholas Miano said. The suspect is being treated at a hospital, Miano said. Both people involved are adults.

Police converged on the area at around 9:15 a.m. Multiple agencies were on the scene throughout the morning, including an ambulance and medical staff.

Neighbors said police told them to shelter in place in their homes. The town of Newington also sent out a message to resident to shelter in place.

Neighbors saw officers with rifles heading toward Gilbert Road, and later had SWAT team members changing into their gear on their lawns. Neighbors said they believe there may be a standoff involving a veteran who lives in the area and that a child may be involved. Officers used a loud speaker to coax someone outside.
