NEWINGTON - There is a salon downtown where a woman in her 80s can be found having her weekly “wash and set” right beside another in her 20s, getting the latest balayage highlights.

It’s Hair on the Square, located at 148 Market Square. Open for the last 60 years, the salon is uniquely known for its generational hair styling. That basically means that grandma, mom and dad, their two children and their older sister in college all have their hair done here.

“I want to keep the tradition going,” owner Tammy Selander said this week. “I want to bring in new young families and have their children grow up and bring their own kids here.”

She and her team of stylists stay updated on the latest trends by participating in cosmetology development conferences and training. But they also cater to older women who have come in once a week for several decades to have their curls set in rollers. Return customers love using their rewards cards for discounts.

“When people come in to my salon, they say it has such a hometown feeling,” Selander said.

In terms of their newest offerings, stylists are perfecting the technique of balayage, which is French for “sweeping.” This refers to a highlighting application that has replaced the long-popular ombre style, French for “shaded.”

“We are now taking classes so we can apply a more precise freehand application using people’s face shape and haircut to design specialty looks,” Selander explained of the innovative lightening treatment.

They also offer a new, high intensity color palette that leaves the hair conditioned and shiny.

Perhaps most important to Selander - aside from excellent service - is the Newington community.

Staff members are often out in the community at local events and raise money to help support various causes.

Most recently they collected donations for the Newington Relay for Life, as well as the Newington Extravaganza fireworks show, set for this Saturday.

“I love Newington,” Selander said. “I feel so happy to have my business in this town. It’s wonderful being part of the community.”

Hair on the Square won first runner-up for Best Hair Salon in the Newington Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Best of Newington competition.

“We want to give a sincere thank you to everyone who voted for us,” Selander said.

Master barber and stylist Kelli Addy is now going on her fifth month at the salon. In celebration, she dreamed up a great idea for a back-to-school special: a family of four for $40. That can be mom, dad and two kids or four children. Kids will also receive goody bags. This offer is by appointment only.

Summer tips for good hair:

- Leave conditioner in highlighted hair while swimming in a pool to prevent color changes due to chlorine

- Pick up a Wet Brush in the salon to prevent cuticle damage while brushing wet hair
