NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain Bees didn’t fare well against the Long Island Ducks before the three hour rain delay on Wednesday afternoon and didn’t fare much better after it.
Mike Carp drove in the Bees’ lone run on an RBI single in the fourth in the lopsided 8-1 loss at New Britain Stadium in a shortened seven-inning game.
The Ducks scored their eight runs on eight hits with five of the runs (four earned) coming of Jed Bradley. The left-hander (3-7) went five innings and struck out four, while walking five. The only time a Long Island player didn’t cross home plate was in the second and fourth innings.
The Ducks started quickly, using a two-out, two-run homer by L.J. Mazzilli to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. It was the start of a big afternoon for Mazzilli, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
The Long Island second baseman also drove in a Ray Fuentes in the third to make it 4-0 following T.J. Rivera’s sacrifice fly, while his infield single in the fifth upped the score to 5-1.
Jon Apostolo’s single in the sixth and Ramon Cabrera’s double in the seventh before another rain delay made it 7-1 and 8-1 respectively.
The Bees, meanwhile, racked up seven hits. But New Britain went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base, struggling against Darin Downs and Zach Weiss (2-1). Downs tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowed one run and struck out six. Weiss went the rest of the way and only gave up two hits, while striking out four.
The Bees will now look to win the rubber match of the series Thursday night.
