NEWINGTON - The Jason Pace era is off to a good start.
The Newington football team had little, if any, trouble in its season opener against Chicopee (MA) High School Friday night, winning 42-17.
It was the first time Newington was playing an out-of-state team.
Coming into the game, the Indians were looking to quarterback Robert Sanchez to lead the offense and lead it he did. The senior accounted for three touchdowns, two passing and one receiving and got plenty of his teammates involved as well.
Cooper Johnson and CJ Cladwell found themselves on the receiving end of Sanchez’s scores through the air, while Aveontae Frazier, Brandon Kamansky and Connor Brennan each added a rushing touchdown of their own.
Newington was so dominant in the game, it began a running clock (up by 35 points) before the second quarter came to a close. The Indians came out of halftime up 35-0 and didn’t punt for the first time until eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Indians will return to Connecticut-based competition next Friday when they travel to Farmington for a 6:30 p.m. start.
