NEWINGTON - The team at Damato Chiropractic Center recently welcomed a new physician who is breaking ground in the field. Dr. Mildred Oxilas is the first graduate of an Advanced Orthopedic Residency training program at the University of Bridgeport.

“I’m the first chiropractor in the country to have completed a residency in orthopedics,” she explained.

Her residency work is now being utilized in research exploring chiropractic as an alternative therapy to medication, in treating chronic pain caused by complex illnesses.

Oxilas is a welcome addition to the center, where innovative techniques and modalities are commonplace.

“I wanted to work in a multidisciplinary setting,” she said. “One of the greatest parts of being here is that we encompass so many facets of patient care. My background isn’t very typical. This team has a way of preserving the tradition of chiropractic while being open to the evidence that supports the work we do.”

She is the fifth doctor there, joining four other chiropractors along with a dozen exercise and massage therapists. The staff works with people of all ages, including those recovering from injuries, others returning to full function and more still, with chronic pain and other issues.

What makes Oxilas different is a varied background in medicine and orthopedics.

“I’ve worked with nothing but medical doctors in the past,” she explained. “I’m very comfortable talking with other doctors to customize a patient’s treatment plan. I can’t help you if I don’t know everything that’s going on.”

Many of her patients suffer from shoulder, knee and joint problems.

“A lot of people tend to believe that chiropractors deal specifically with the spine, but the spine is attached to everything else in the body,” Oxilas pointed out.

She is certified to administer acupuncture and dry needling, a newer therapy to improve range of motion.

With a full range of services and flexible hours, Damato Chiropractic Center appeals to people of all ages and needs. The 7,500-square-foot facility at 123 Lowery Place features a fitness center, spa, massage therapy area and separate treatment rooms.
