NEWINGTON - Treasured possessions that spend most of the year hidden in garages will be out cruising Newington next Thursday in a show by the same name.
Many classic and luxury car owners have “daily driver” vehicles that stand in as regular transportation. This occasion offers the lesser-seen, classier models a chance in the spotlight and local residents, a glimpse back in time.
The 11th annual Cruising Newington Classic Car Show is set for Thursday, June 8, on Market Square. But don’t be fooled: It won’t be all classic this year. The show committee has opened up entrance criteria to makes and models of any age. The only vehicles prohibited? “Burnouts and bicycles.”
Chairman Bob Newbold will likely be arriving in his 1950 Plymouth, passed down to him by his grandfather. The odometer boasts just 34,000 miles and Newbold estimated he adds no more than three to four hundred more each year. But the real reason for his participation is to get a look at all the other cars, Newbold said this week.
“It brings back a lot of old memories of some the cars I drove and my father drove when I was a kid. It’s a refreshing look back on the good old days.”
The Connecticut Street Legends - one of the premier car clubs in the area - will be supplying many of the vehicles people will see. Around a dozen trophies will be awarded to the top picks of club members, elected officials and Chamber of Commerce members.
Local eateries will have food for sale on the street and the air will be filled with oldies music.
“It’s nice to go get a bite to eat and then stroll around downtown,” incoming Chamber Vice President Deanna Reney pointed out. “It’s always fun to see the faces of people who didn’t even know it was going on and then they see this whole production.”
The event is always held right around the second week of June, as a kickoff to the season of hot days, warm nights, convertibles and barbecues. “It’s a really fun family event and a wonderful event for the town,” Incoming Chamber President Kathy Braga said.
She and her husband will be arriving in a big bucket truck from their family business, B&M Tree Service.
“We’re bringing it for people to look at as an alternative to all the fancy cars,” Braga said.
The show will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Market Square. In case of rain, it will be rescheduled for June 16 and then June 23. The entry fee for show participants is $10 per car. The first 200 to enter will receive customized dash plaques. Admission to spectators is free. Over 1,000 visitors are expected.
