LORETTO, PA – The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils are still in search of their first victory in 2022 entering the third and final leg of their three-game road trip against Saint Francis University.
The road stretch began in Week 3 at Southeastern Louisiana in what ended as a 64-point loss for the Devils. Week 4 at UAlbany also ended by way of a loss but the team was able to post more positive offensive numbers including 108 yards and a touchdown for running back Nas Smith as well as 98 yards and two touchdowns for wide receiver Erik Surratt.
Despite the string of losses, Surratt can feel the momentum building for Central’s offense and things they could be figuring things out just in time.
“I feel like we’re making progress and making the strides that we need,” Surratt said. “I feel like it’s a good sign for our offense with where we’re at right now and with conference play approaching. We just need to prepare every day and prepare harder by giving more effort in practice and that will translate toward the game.”
CCSU has seven games remaining and six of them will be against NEC opponents, including this Saturday.
Saint Francis opened the season with a pair of losses against Akron and Richmond before their last two wins over Wagner and most recently Norfolk State. They’ve outscored the last two opponents by a margin of 36-16.5.
“The scheme is the toughest part of their defense,” Surratt said. “They’re very sound schematically and overall have a great defense.”
No matter the numbers indicate or what Saint Francis throws at the Blue Devils on Saturday, Surratt said the feeling in the locker room is the same among all the players.
“Everybody is just hungry for a win,” he said.
They’ll have their chance to get into the win column and gain a bit of momentum before their return home for Homecoming Weekend next Saturday when they’ll host Brown.
CCSU at Saint Francis University
When: Saturday, 12:00 p.m.
Where: DeGol Field, Loretto Pa.
Records: CCSU 0-4, SFU 2-2
Last Meeting: CCSU 24, SFU 21 (11/20/2021)
There is a case to be made for CCSU in this game as a team desperate for a win and taking some strides in the right direction against a tough UAlbany team on the road in Week 3; however, Saint Francis is hot off of two wins and feature some of the most depth offensively the Blue Devils will see all season. Last game they featured two quarterbacks, nine ball carriers and six pass catchers. This is also Saint Francis’ home opener which could keep CCSU behind the eight ball in terms of the atmosphere in the building.
