CCSU men's and women's basketball lose at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD - The Central Connecticut men’s basketball trailed throughout the game in a 73-61 loss at Sacred Heart on Saturday in a Northeast Conference game.

CCSU got as close as six points late in the second half, but the Pioneers managed to hold off the rally and push the margin to double-figures at the foul line.

Junior Jamir Coleman led three Blue Devils in double-figures with 20 points.

The loss drops Central to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the NEC, while SHU is 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Coleman added a team-high nine rebounds for CCSU, while senior Tyler Kohl finished with 15 points and junior Joe Hugley had 11 points. CCSU committed just five turnovers in the game, but was unable to overcome shooting just 23-of-71 (.324) overall and 4-of-26 (.154) from the three-point line.

The Blue Devils travel to Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. game.

CCSU women’s basketball falls at Sacred Heart

The Central Connecticut women’s basketball team also fell to Sacred Heart, 66-61, in its Northeast Conference season opener in Fairfield on Saturday.

Senior Kiana Patterson led the Blue Devils with 18 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

CCSU falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast Conference, while Sacred Heart improves to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Ashley Berube was one rebound short of another double-double. She totaled 12 points and nine rebounds, while tying her career-high in blocks with five. Sophomore Ashley Forker finished with a season-high 11 points along with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

The Blue Devils are back in action Monday, Jan. 7 hosting Wagner for their NEC home opener at 7 p.m.
