NEW BRITAIN - Central Connecticut State University is narrowing down its search for a new Athletic Director.

Robert Wolff, Chair of the search committee announced in an email to faculty and students Friday afternoon there are three finalists for the positions: Michael Waddell, Brian Barrio and Steve Villanti. All three will hold open forums next week to give the CCSU community a chance to address them.

The school has been without an athletic director since former AD Paul Schlickmann left for Fairfield University back in September.

Waddell has served as an Associate Athletic Director for External Services at four universities - University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, Towson University and University of Illinois-Champaign - around the country, spanning from 2001 to 2016. He has since been the Vice President for Marketing and Communication at Richmond Raceway. He has a Bachelor’s in sports management and a Master’s in sports administration.

Waddell will have his open forum on Tuesday, June 19 at 2 p.m.

Brian Barrio is not a stranger to CCSU, having served as an athletics intern in 2003. Since then, he has been on staff at two athletic conferences, the Ivy League and the America East Conference. He has also served on the staff at three universities, including being an Associate Athletic Director at Pepperdine from 2011 to 2015 and at Nevada from 2015 to now.

Barrio’s open forum will be on Thursday, June 21 at 2 p.m.

Steve Villanti is the only current CCSU faculty member to be named a finalist. Villanti has been the Associate Athletic Director for External Services for the Blue Devils since 2009. He handles fundraising, corporate sponsorships and marketing the school’s sports programs. Before that, he was an assistant coach for CCSU’s football team from 1985 to 2001. Villanti also has two Masters degrees from CCSU.

Villanti’s open forum will be held Friday, June 22 at 2 p.m.

All of the open forums will take place in Torp Theater in Davidson Hall.
