MOON, Pa. - The Central Connecticut women’s basketball team had little trouble hitting shots from long-range Monday night.
It just turned out to be the only thing that went in the Blue Devils’ favor.
Despite connecting on 10 3-pointers for the fourth time in a game this season, CCSU fell to NEC-leader Robert Morris 66-47.
Megan Smith scored a game-high 22 points for the Colonials (16-4, 9-0), who completed the month of January undefeated. Her teammate, Nneka Ezeigbo, registered her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Morgan Johnson was the Blue Devils’ leading scorer. The graduate transfer finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
But this game was won in the paint. Robert Morris outscored CCSU (2-17, 2-7) 30-7 in the paint and held a 42-32 edge on the glass.
That helped turn what was a 1-point deficit for CCSU after the first quarter into a nine by halftime and then 17 by the end of the third quarter.
The Blue Devils sank six first-half 3-pointers on 6-of-15 (.400) shooting, including two in-a-row from junior Sydney Hines to close out the second quarter and make the score 31-22 at the midway point.
Johnson led CCSU at the half with eight points and Smith paced Robert Morris with 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
The Blue Devils will finish off their three-game road tilt on Saturday at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. before returning to New Britain on Monday, Feb. 5 to host Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
