Bristol Blues pitcher Genaro has elite command on mound

BRISTOL - Every time Bristol Blues starting pitcher Michael Genaro takes the mound, manager Ronnie Palmer knows exactly what he’s getting.

The Babson College junior has been a model of consistency. This is his second summer in Bristol and so far he’s been the ace of the pitching staff.

His 2.25 ERA ranks sixth in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

But where Genaro has really stood out is his command of the plate - it’s as good as it gets in the league.

His two walks in 24 innings this season for Bristol leads the FCBL for pitchers having thrown that many innings.

This summer is no aberration, though. Genaro has commanded the plate his whole career.

Last summer in 43 2/3 innings pitched, Genaro issued just six walks for the season, again the least amount of walks for a pitcher throwing that many innings.

And at Babson, he’s pitched 180 1/3 innings and has only walked 10 batters.

His ability to command his pitches has led to a 2.99 career ERA in three seasons at college and a 3.50 ERA last summer for the Blues. Regardless of the numbers, Genaro is humble about his control around the plate.

“For me it’s always, at least for the last year or so, getting more consistent with my off-speed,” Genaro said. “I haven’t really ever had too much trouble commanding my fastball, it’s what’s gotten me to this point. I think getting to be able to command that curveball and that changeup and having them being sharp and effective and locating them when and where I want is going to take me to the next level and in the three starts this year I’ve had those three pitches working, which changes the at-bats for me entirely.”

As the season progresses, Palmer looks to figure out the rotation to use in the stretch run.

It’s a pretty good bet Genaro will be the No. 1 arm Palmer turns to.

“Mike is Mike. He’s doing what he’s done his entire time at college and last summer,” Palmer said. “He’s been pretty competitive for us the whole time he’s been here. He’s shown what he can do for us.”
